Acting 101

If you've been wondering... Can I do it? Can I act? The answer is, yes, you can!

Perform Australia's 'Acting 101' course in Canberra is the best place for you to start your journey as an actor! Get out of your skin and find the performer within.

Through drama games, script work, improvisation and vocal exercise, you'll cover the fundamentals of acting for stage and screen from the ground up.

The best way to try acting

Our goal in Acting 101 is to give you an introductory acting class that gives you confidence and supports you in your journey to become an actor. Acting is an art form that anyone can learn. Whether you're looking to:
Tap into your creativity
Increase self-confidence
Develop a new hobby, or
Are curious about the industry
...you'll be able to take your first steps under the guidance of our excellent tutors.

In this eight-week course, you'll be introduced to:
Improvisation - developing spontenaity as an actor
Objectives and motivation - yes, you'll actually be able to ask - and answer - "What's my motivation?"
Text analysis - how to read a script for clues about your character
Warming up as an actor - knowing what's required, and why
Auditions - what are they, and why the industry uses them
Working from scripts - how to develop your character, memorise and deliver your lines, and use rehearsal processes.

Do I get to perform?

Yes, you do! - Live in our studio!

But it's a low-pressure performance - for most participants, it's their first one ever! So we know that can be challenging for you. The performance usually in the last week of the term, and you can invite your family or friends to come along and see you (or not!).

​You'll be in a little scene, most likely with one or two other people. So yes, there are some lines to learn - but your tutor will guide you every step of the way, working with you every week to help you make the most of your performance. Everybody gets nervous about the prospect of being in a show - that's COMPLETELY NORMAL.

But there'll be lots of encouragement and learning along the way. And it's OK to make mistakes. Plus you'll have the buzz of getting up on stage and strutting your stuff!

Ever spent time with other writers? (Or aspiring writers?) They're a wonderful mob! You'll get peer feedback on your writing and have plenty to chat about on breaks.

You'll learn a few ways to come up with creative ideas and have opportunity to write during the weekend.

5 / You'll know exactly how to write a short work for performance.

You'll come away with a solid story idea, a suite of characters, and the basis of a script for stage or screen by the end of the weekend.
