How a beginner's acting course can help you in unexpected ways

Every actor starts as a beginner - and if you're after a beginner's acting course, we've got you covered right here at Perform Australia! Our 'Acting 101' course has been running every term for about 15 years now - with new people joining every time. It's an introductory course, designed to give the shy, curious, and intrepid a chance to try out acting for the first time!

But what can an acting course for beginners do for you?

Perhaps you've never thought about it - but it can actually do more than just teach you to act! Here are some of the comments that past students have made about studying acting.

It gave me self-confidence.

Many people try acting because they want to come out of themselves - to be bigger, or bolder, with others. And yes, an acting course will help you do that! Not only will you meet new people - which means you'll be stepping out of your comfort zone socially - you'll also be trying new things. Through drama games and exercises, you'll develop mastery of a range of skills. And from mastery comes confidence! In a beginner's acting course, you'll not be performing Shakespeare or winning an Oscar, because you're not ready for that... but you will be standing up in front of others, expressing yourself, and learning some new skills -like how to memorise lines and perform them, how to work with an ensemble of other actors, and how to improve your voice. Self-confidence comes through all these things.

It helped me with my public speaking.

Public speaking can be scary for all kinds of folks - and yet it's something we often have to do, whether in a meeting at work, at a wedding, or even when we receive an award. Doing an acting course will teach you about presenting yourself in front of others, how to manage your nerves before a performance, and even how to warm up before you get started, so you are ready to go, and focused. These are all the skills of an actor - and they are transferrable to public speaking. But - the good news is, learning acting is way more fun than learning public speaking alone!

It helped me reconnect with my creative side.

Some people who join a beginner's acting course are looking for a creative outlet. Maybe the day job is a bit dull, or maybe you've been stuck at home with kids for the last few years - but you're itching to try something fresh and creative. Or, perhaps, once upon a time, you were in fact a creative person... and you did drama at high school years ago, and still remember it fondly... but somehow you've been focused on other things in recent times. Doing an acting course helps you tap into your creativity, and reignites something inside of you from times past. Part of this is about learning to play again - something that is drummed out of us as we approach adulthood. So - it's actually a heap of fun! And yes, you may find yourself doing something you've never tried before. But that's a good thing.

I had a sneaking suspicion I wanted to do this for a living.

And then, amongst all those looking for a creative outlet, or looking to build self-confidence, is the student who really, really wants to be a professional actor. That's the person who's always wanted to try acting and feels like they have an instinct for it - but they've never really had the chance. In a beginner's acting course, you'll be able to start building from the ground up with the basics, and then you can go on and look at the options that will take you further. A beginner's course is a great way to test the waters and see if acting is what you expected it to be. You have to start somewhere, after all!

So if you're ready to try a beginner's acting course in Canberra, then enrol now in Acting 101.
