Learn the basics of stage combat - a wonderful skill for the actor! Hitting, falling, dying... it's all an illusion when we see it on stage and screen. Even so, it's still really physical work for the actor involved.  In this weekend intensive, you'll learn some important stage combat skills with actor and martial artist, Jim Punnett.

For: â€‹Actors who want to understand basic stage combat skills. (Note: This course does not give you the skills to become a professional stunt person.)

It's to die for...

Whether you're working on a local indie film about the dark side of town, dabbling in Shakespearean swordfighting, or need to prepare the perfect death scene, stage combat is for you!​​ You'll learn about:

​

  • Rolls, falls and breakfalls

  • Continual contact techiques

  • Punching, kneeing, kicking and stomping

  • Fainting, dying and lifting a body

  • Sword, stick and gun handling

  • Preparing and rehearsing fight scenes: learn about choreography and safety processes in rehearsal

  • Monitoring your physical limitations: being conscious of what you can and can't do

  • Conducting safety checks:  before you perform

  • Maintaining the illusion through pace: learn how to phrase your work and keep up the mometum

  • Laws to be aware of: around stage combat and your responsibilities.

 

NOTE TO COURSE PARTICIPANTS: To do this course you must be in good health as it will be physically demanding. It does involve falling on crash mats, occasional contact with the ground, rapid movement, using sticks and other combat weaponry, and heightened physical activity.

This course is NOT suitable for:

  • Anyone who has undergone recent surgery

  • Anyone who has recently experienced COVID, flu or another serious respiratory disease

  • Anyone with recent injuries that impact movement

  • Anyone with a heart condition

  • Anyone with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, brittle bones or similar conditions

  • Anyone who may experience a trauma response as a result of working with imaginative imitation of violent actions (no actual violence takes place, however, but you are in a position where you are seeing and imitating hits, falls, use of weapons, etc).

About your tutor

Jim Punnett

Jim Punnett is a multifaceted talent known for his exceptional skills as an actor, filmmaker, comedian and martial artist. With a career spanning several years, Jim has captivated audiences with his dynamic performances in both film and stage.

 

Raised with a strong background in martial arts, Jim developed a deep passion for the discipline from a young age. He dedicated himself to mastering various martial art forms, including Karate, Kickboxing, Wushu, Muay Thai and Wrestling.

 

Backed by a Diploma Screen & Media, Jim combines his expertise in martial arts with his studied experience in filmmaking to choreograph as well as provide cinematography to creative projects. Jim has provided choreography & performed for such projects as Marvel's Shang-Chi, Pacific Rim Uprising, and numerous short films including Career Fight starring Logie-nominated actress Chloé Hayden.

 

Jim has also showcased his acting talent on the screen & stage. His interest in psychology and open versatility have allowed him to portray a wide range of characters whilst also rooting them in something real.

 

With a string of successful projects under his belt, Jim brings honesty, ingenuity and truth to whatever role he fills and his passion for storytelling is evident in every role he undertakes.

3. If I begin attending a weekend course, and I withdraw from the course mid-way through, or do not return for a second day of training, I understand that I am not entitled to a refund for the remainder of the course.

 

4. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, such as tutor illness, a course needs to be postponed, Perform Australia will make every effort to contact me in advance to ask whether I would like a refund, or to transfer my enrolment to a new course date.

 

5. If Perform Australia cancels a program in its entirety, I understand a refund will be given to me. 

 

6. Refunds are not given in other circumstances. ​
