The Actor's Process

Some actors run on instinct alone - and are left faltering once they hit an obstacle and can't 'find' their character'.

But there is another way.

The actor's job is to portray a character using the script and their own ideas - and then refine and play that character under the director's guidance.

To do this, you need technique - a process you can use to nail down your ideas and create something that's faithful to the script.

This course will teach you how to do just that - how to mine a script for clues, then how to translate those clues into a full-bodied character for stage or screen.

WHEN: 6pm - 9:30pm, Tuesday nights, 11 February through to 1 April.

VENUE: Studio 1, Perform Australia, 2A Barker St, Griffith ACT 2603

PERFORMANCE OUTCOME: In-studio monologue and scene performance

COST: $950 (includes accreditation)

Develop an acting process you can use every time.

Every time you come to a new role as an actor, you need to be able to pick up your script, read it closely, make notations, put in some thought, and then bring your character to life on stage or screen. It's a process.

In The Actor's Process, we teach you a tried and tested method of doing this - a script analysis technique that will empower you to move forward as an actor with confidence.

Here's just a little of what you'll cover:

How scripts work

You'll learn to examine scripts inside out - scripts will become so much more to you than words on a page! As a blueprint for performance, you'll begin to notice the conventions of different types of scripts and how to read a script as an actor approaching a professional role.

Understand "given circumstances"

Learn the language actors use around 'given circumstances', and how that's a key tool for developing your character from a script. Learn how to find your character's given circumstances, and how to translate these ideas into a living, breathing character for stage or screen.

Apply your knowledge in performance

You'll apply your knowledge to both a monologue and a scene performance, embodying the characters you've developed through a thorough script analysis process. Your tutor will work with you over a number of weeks to refine your performance, which you'll present to family and friends during the course.
