The Health Benefits Of Singing

If you're on a health kick, singing is absolutely your next big activity!

Singing lessons are not just about hitting the right notes—they also provide significant scientific benefits to your general health. Singing engages the respiratory system, encouraging deep, controlled breathing that improves oxygen flow to the brain and body. This can reduce stress and promote relaxation, as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which counters the body’s stress response.

Not only that, singing releases endorphins, the brain's "feel-good" chemicals. These improve mood and can reduce feelings of anxiety or depression. Another hormone, oxytocin, is also released during singing, fostering feelings of bonding and trust, particularly when singing in groups or choirs. This communal aspect of singing can reduce loneliness and increase a sense of belonging. In addition to our individual singing lessons, we run musical theatre programs for children, which build on these factors.

On a neurological level, singing stimulates both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, enhancing cognitive function and memory.

This is especially beneficial for older adults, as studies suggest that musical activities can delay cognitive decline.

Additionally, the practice of learning to sing improves posture and strengthens core muscles, contributing to better physical health. Regular singing lessons can even boost immune function, as controlled breathing improves lung capacity and circulation, helping the body fend off illness.
